How do you handle stress?
I have found that one of the best ways to improve exam performance is to improve how you handle stress.
So how do you manage stress? Do you have a good handle on it or does it control you every day?
Exams are stressful, there is no denying it, but how you handle it is dependent on how well you handle all the other stress you have to deal with. Exams are a fact of every student’s life and that is unlikely to change in the near future but what you can do is start to employ some stress management techniques to minimise and manage stress in your life so you when you do exams, you perform to the best of your ability.
Here are some of my favourites:
- Listening to music – nothing relaxes me like listening to music and it is often the way I spend time right before an exam, giving me a chance to relax my brain before the stress of an exam.
- Exercise – exercise is a proven way for me to get some much needed relaxation and de-stress and the best news is you don’t have to join a gym to get some exercise – going for a walk can be just as effective and combining that with listening to music, this is a great stress management technique.
- Reading a book – I love reading and the great thing is reading a book is an excellent stress management technique (https://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/reading-stress-relief). It’s also very cost-effective in that you can borrow a book from your local library and start de-stressing today.
