Why Tutoring?

As the new year starts it is common for students to think they can do everything themselves and they don’t need any extra help.  Needing a tutor is often viewed as a sign of weakness that you can’t do everything yourself.  It doesn’t need to be this way.  People need tutors for all sorts of reasons – some have trouble adapting at Uni and just need someone to explains things slowly.  This isn’t an admission that you will need help for the rest of your career but just that you need help at this particular time.

Some people also prefer to learn in a one on one environment as they get rather gun shy in a big lecture theatre or a crowded classroom.  They can then ask any question they want without the pressure of speaking before a huge group of people.  It does make a difference when going from asking a question where there may be 30 students to a lecture theatre where there is 300!

Others may need help with a particular topic or an assignment question and just need someone to guide them through.  Whatever the reason don’t afraid to ask for help when you need it.  My greatest regret during my first time at University was not asking for help when I needed it and deciding to struggle through myself.  That ended up being to my own detriment in failing a few classes and making it more difficult to find employment once I graduated.

So take it from me, remember to ask questions, seek help, get a tutor if you need to.  This is your education and your life, you need to make the most of it.
